Cold and Lonely
The cold weather on Gethen contributes to the theme of isolation because typically being cold is associated with being alone. I know that when I think of extreme coldness, I picture some person all alone standing in the snow with a big coat on shivering to themselves. The cold just has a lonely connotation to it. Also, in the book during Estraven's isolation, he's primarily walking in the cold which further enhances the theme of loneliness that comes with extreme cold temperatures. When I'm in cold weather I know that I mostly feel alone because I'm always shivering to myself to try and preserve my warmth, as I'm sure many others do.

Hey Bella! I love the picture you created of extreme coldness. A person in a huge coat shivering by themselves surrounded by snow is basically everyone on Gethen. It seems that Gethenians are shielded from the weather but also from interaction because of their large coats. And I agree that cold just seems to have a lonely sound to it. Bright and happy scenes are often filled with sun and warmth. On Gethen there is very little warmth making the whole setting appear gloomier, lonelier.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the coldness and the loneliness go hand-in-hand with each other. And I feel that may have to do with when you're cold you are usually more huddled into yourself and trying to keep your warmth, and when you're feeling lonely you usually hug and bring yourself in. The cold does have the lonely feeling in it, in that sense.
ReplyDeleteIf its cold outside people then go inside their house usually. In a way they isolate themselves interaction with people.
