Although there are both benefits and drawbacks to living on campus and living at home, it is difficult to determine which outweighs the other. The most obvious con to living on campus is the cost. In the 2014 to 2015 school year, the average cost of room and board was $9,999 as stated by Susannah Snider on usnews.com. However, this number is often higher when talking about room and board in Southern California. But, the major con to living at home is missing out on the so often talked about "college experience".
What do you think? If you had to choose, would you pay to live on campus or save the money and possibly miss out on getting the entire college experience?
Also, are you planning on going to a college in state or out of state? What college is your top choice?

Well I think maybe for your freshman year, since you're starting fresh, it would be best to live at home and save some money and then the following year you can make your decision. In my case, I'm living with my parents for now because I'm planning to go to a college in state and I can be saving money for other things (: but anyway my point is to wait until your sophomore year. hope that helps !
ReplyDeleteHi Navid, I agree with your response we go save that money!
DeleteHey Liz! I'm having the same conversation with my parents right now. It's a really huge decision to make , for most kids this is their first experience living without constant parental supervision which is definitely a responsibility. It's also about your parent's having trust in you outside of the fact of the amount of money they're going to spend on Room & Board. I've noticed that most Universities or at least the ones that I'm interested in attending require Freshman to live on campus for their first year, which gives the student the opportunity to be immersed in the campus. On the perspective of living within proximity of the school already I definitely think if there isn't a financial barrier the student should try to live on campus for the pure fact of immersion. Aside from that I don't see it as a mandatory thing. Moral of the story it's just an additional part to play for an additional component to the "college experience".

I'd rather live on campus you meet new people.
ReplyDeleteThat is true to but I think saving money can be really beneficial for you.
DeleteIn my opinion I think saving money is best because you can still have the college experience living at home still. Not living on the campus will limit your college experience to some degree but people should do what is best for them but if it was my choice I would save money living at home. Living at home also saves money for you to buy other things you may want to buy which is something I would favor in doing. I am planning to stay in state and so far I am planing on going to a Community, Cypress College which is my top school choice because it fits what I want to do.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I'd prefer to live on campus to start getting used to the idea of being on my own without my parents available to help 24/7. Also, it would be fun to get that full college experience and make new friends and some fun memories!
