Before coming to the US I have always thought Americans lived a healthy lifestyle, yet in just a couple of years, I've come to realized that Americans eat far worse than the people in my home country. Malnutrition was a common problem for many kids in the Philippines, while here in the US, obesity is one of the foremost concern of the public. I didn't particularly care about what I ate before hand, but learning more about personal health made me consider what I choose to eat. If I could go back some years to my childhood, I'd tell myself to eat better. But even today, avoiding fast food is a difficult task. Its so cheap and convenient, I even live near Jack In the Box so buying their dollar tacos isn't much of a hard decision. Fast food is a definite habit that I have and something I should possibly limit in my life.
The food industry seems like its already changing. In just a few years more and more people have become aware that most of everything served in the fast food chain is unhealthy. The bad press received from the media brought about some changes in the menus of fast food restaurants especially the popular ones, McDonald's being one of them. I don't know I the supposed changes actually helps out in the long run, but the fact that health concerns have taken the attention of the food industry means they are trying to find a solution to the problem.
I definitely think times have changed just like you said and I believe we as American citizens need to still educate ourselves on this topic.
