School Lunches To Eat or Not to Eat

I did my research paper on school lunches. Should school lunches be required to serve a healthy school lunch. I didn't go into how the lunches were made but I did gain knowledge on what type of food they are serving us. There is a program where half of public schools participate in called the National School Lunch Program and this program provides free food to students. The food they are providing is processed and they slap the label healthy onto it. I had no knowledge of the chemicals and hormones they are adding to the foods to make it more appealing and make the students full at a faster rate. After researching this did change my knowledge on foods in the cafeteria and what should I eat and not eat. I am more aware and alert on what foods are healthy for me. If I could go back 4 years with this knowledge then, I would have started packing my own lunches and avoiding anything to do with the cafeteria. If I would've started packing my own lunches then, I believe my body would be much more healthier and I would see fast food as garbage. To reform the school lunches, I would suggest spending more money on the foods and giving students WHOLE foods. If student's had whole foods then their academic and behavior performance would increase which would be beneficial to their grades. Just spending a little more money on the process to create the school lunches would be a major change on school lunches.

  1. I did not know any of this either, and I am alarmed too. They put hormones into lunches to make kids full faster? That does not seem right at all. Thankfully, I haven't eaten a school lunch since like ever. I agree with your suggestion to feed healthier lunches to children. It is a constant struggle and there have been many attempts, but it always just seems to fall short and not become the big reform we need. I think part of the problem is that we need to find healthy food kids will eat, because we can go," Oh, yeah here's some broccoli...super healthy and cheap", but no kid wants that, We have to come from multiple angles, because this issue is a combination of a lot of things wrong with school lunches.

  2. I find it interesting there is a National School Lunch Program that picks out the food the schools eat. It's a little off topic in a way but I feel Michelle Obama had a big impact on the school lunches because she wanted a more nutrition diet in our food. I'm sure not all the food she helped pick out was good but for the most of it yea. Anyways packing your own lunch would have been better if you chose to eat healthier, because you know what your consuming if you picked it out.
