This article is a summary of some television show; however, it caught my eye because of the content that was mentioned in the show. The program the article summarizes is called Tomorrow’s Food and it is true to its name. The first part of the article discusses a farm in which everything is controlled and the crops (in this case it is stated they are tomatoes) are “grown in a dense wool made of volcanic rock” i.e. no soil, or ground is involved. Furthermore, everything is controlled by computer. Every drop of water the plants get, every degree in the change of temperature, all the nutrients the plant gets are chosen and implemented by computer and given to the plants through pipes. The article also mentions pizza-vending machines, robot farmers, and cloud seeding (dropping chemicals into clouds to make it produce more rain).
I chose this article because, while it does not elaborate a lot of these issues and is more of a summary of the program it is based on, I thought it was a good place to start. It highlighted exactly what I want to research “the future of food technology”. There is a growing movement of organic farming and knowing your food. I want to research the opposite of that. I’m interested in the more technology that is being used in all aspects of food from the techniques used in farming to how the food is processed to how the food is pushed onto the consumers. This article was helpful into opening my eyes to what kind of measures they are beginning to research and take in food technology. This type of work extends beyond modifying a plant to against certain pesticides, or using pesticides in the first place. It is changing the way we grow food completely and making it more and more manufactured.
