How much can we really trust food labels?

I recently started researching the topic of food labeling because it has always been intriguing to know exactly what our food consists of. Have you ever thought about it? What is really in your food? Can we rely on food companies to tell us the truth about the product we consume? Should we focus more on the small printed labels or the large labels? I say this because many companies pull away from breaking any laws so they make sure they label the foods with the real ingredients, but they do not integrate the negative with positive and they do not do it in an obvious way either. So, these food companies emphasize in focusing on making the good obvious and the bad much more hidden. Therefore, what do you guys think needs to be done in order to recognize a negative label from a positive one?
Aside from this, have you ever thought if the large printed words "FAT FREE" really mean as it says? Of course not! After some research, I found that Fat free foods may contain the same, not more preservatives, carbohydrates, calories and sugars than the normal products. What does this really say about our government? How many lies are food companies feeding us? I wish there were ways to change all of this because we are always on the search for sugar free foods, but do you guys believe that the media involved in our lives has any impact on this as well?

  1. Hey Susana, I believe media definitely has a huge impact on the foods we eat everyday. I'm not ashamed to admit that when I see a juicy burger on an advertisement a part of me is immediately tempted to get it. Media is the key to stimulating our brains and it's no surprise that the food industry and the media are very closely linked.

  2. I agree after doing research I feel that most people don't really read all of the facts or really check out their food so this is an easy way for companies to manipulate the consumer mindset.
